Presentation Development 3

I’d presented my first PDF to Tracy. At first, I really struggled to find the confidence to present this - I write in incoherent language, not making sense in long sentences, and I’m not very confident at all at presentation. Following on from lots of rehearsal and making sure the work was as minimal as possible, to ensure I’d be quite confident at writing, the PDF went well (or so I’d thought)

The problem with theory is it never made sense to me - I could never seem to gain clarification on what exactly was the right way to approach this topic, and sort of the relevance behind it to my course. Despite this I still managed to come up with a subject that gained some approval from teachers and also something that I would find interesting enough to be able to write an essay on it. Last year, this was my weakest grade, and it still is - I’m not perfect at english nor gaining the theory behind anything, I’m more of a person who’s better at designing and focusing on making something just look nice.

This would then gather me a few issues with trying to create meaning behind my work, such as the current brief or the PDF work. I’d always try to heavily research what I wanted my work to look like but could never grasp the concept quite as well as I wanted.

My feedback from Tracy consisted of the following:
  • You provide an overview of each ident, their target audience, identity, nostalgic references, and Britishness. Very well prepared and presented, clearly delivering your personal insights into the perceived identities You take quite a personal approach and consideration of the elements, you demonstrate a level of analysis and understanding of the elements at play here…. To reach a direction of enquiry - Do idents help the channel branding? But I feel you are misinterpreting a fundamental understanding of the role of branding and the techniques and influences involved – you can take this further – By investigating how idents originated – the impact they have and why they work – deconstruct branding and what makes us desire, prefer or choose a particular channel More indepth and coherent case study examples will add breadth, depth and insight and a clearer direction of enquiry and a more coherent question to explore Consider some theorists and experts, their opinions will help you gain a fuller understanding of the influences.

What I’d garnered from the Feedback was that my general overview of each PDF proved successful, however I needed to look more in-depth at each of my chosen subject - I understand what my topic was, but the insights proved quite personal (which is what my chosen idea was, I thought this would be more to my advantage instead of a negative point) and I needed to take my research further and gain a full understanding of why indents are created, why they work and a coherent study of the theory behind idents.

This was quite a hard concept to come across for me - I still needed some clarification as to what this would entitle as this was quite hard for me to understand. I wanted to start creating how idents originated, the impact they have… so this would be the next form of research for me. I’d probably end up asking Poilna again about how this would make sense and how I’d create something that would be more cohesive for me, and make something that would me easy for me to understand and not overcomplicated theory behind it.

Presentation Development 2

I started planning out what I wanted my PDF to look like. Because of the quick nature of the first presentation, I knew it only needed to be around seven slides long, so stuck to this to fit everything in: it also allowed me to condense my research significantly which kept me to my five minute time constraint.

Keeping each page simple would be hard, as I'd have to condense all the research into a few sentences and then elaborate for each page correctly. I found this challenging as I'm not used to planning out what I'm going to say, I find this is more difficult for me to sound professional and in the right manner.

The first page I'd look at would be to do with the BBC. I set up questions for each page to make the process of writing notes on each one easier.

BBC:
What is BBC?
Narrow down to the TV/modern era, specifically which channels. Brief introduction to the BBC

Ident:
What is an ident?
Examples?
How they impact?

Idents to the BBC:
How they are on BBC 1, 2, 3?
Why are they used?
Who makes them?
Trends of idents: Why they're changing

BBC 3:
Narrow down to the BBC 3 to indicate more research
Why they changed?
Move to online?
How do the idents reflect the target audience?

Branding of Idents:
How do they target their audience?
Or, not?
Reasoning behind why they're branded like that?
Does every ident do this, whats the most famous one? Why?

This would be my plan for each of my slides on what to answer and how to keep the subjects as narrowed down as possible. Specifically, I wanted to go:

Idents > Idents of the BBC > BBC 3 Idents > Target Audience of BBC 3

This would allow me to have a natural progression throughout my PDF, and make it easier for me to progress to each slide.

    Seminar: Introduction

Our first seminar back was to refresh ourselves for the year ahead and prepare for any upcoming work we had. We also delved into ways of researching, which proved really helpful to begin my first project back.

What (do you want to investigate)
Why (do you want to investigate)
How (does it relate to you?)
    How (will you proceed)

By following the four main questions when researching, you're able to come up with an efficient way of explaining yourself through research, which I took to myself when starting my first project, Cybernetic Self. This also helps if you're stuck and don't know where to start, a good ideal is to begin by using the four questions and it enables you to explain yourself in a more competent manner.

Further into this seminar we looked at our own development and how, with the seminars and theory lectures, we'd be able to go from starting in year one to becoming fully fledged creative students in the final year.

    Year 1 - Foundation, Year 2 - Transformation, Year 3 - Professional, Year 4 - Independence and Originality

This year is focused on transforming into our own independent, self working creative person, which allows us to manage our own time, work and ethics. This would be applied in the third year for placement and allow us to gain some real experience into the working world.

We then applied our research methods we'd learnt into a rebranding for a museum called The Whitney. Applying these questions to a piece of writing enabled us to extract and learn quite a lot about the website, illustrating the change in the museum and how the designers approached the assignment as to "embrace the spirit of the museum"

I'd associate the Whitney rebrand with likeness such as the BBC (2+3), Channel 4, and Sky Cinema rebranding; making themselves more modern and interactive with their audience.

Overall I enjoyed my first seminar back. They felt more related to the course compared to the first year, and allowed me to start immediately applying what I'd learned into my current project. It proved interesting and let me work alongside my peers, which I'd really liked too.
